Abdul Basit Abd us-Samad

Sheikh Abdul Basit Abd us-Samad (1927–1988) was born in Qena, Upper Egypt. He memorized the Quran, mastered Tajwid and vocal techniques, and won three world Qiraat competitions in the early 1970s. He released the first commercial Quran recordings and served as president of Egypts Reciters Union until his passing in 1988.
